Seattle Museum launches Kurt Cobain-themed exhibit

NirvanaThe Fader is reporting that the Seattle Art Museum has launched a new exhibit focused on the late frontman of Nirvana. Titled Kurt, the exhibit which began last week, will:

…explore the ways in which the grunge movement’s most iconic figure continues to influence modern artists from a multitude of disciplines. The works on display run the gamut from the literal-a sculpture by Joe Mama-Nitzberg and Marc Swanson made from spun glass tinsel called “angel hair” and dried sprigs of baby’s breath (a sort of tactile “Heart Shaped Box” shoutout)-to the more abstract, like Gillian Wearing’s silent video featuring the artist dancing to Nirvana’s “Come as You Are” and Gloria Gaynor’s “I Will Survive.” Most haunting, perhaps is Alice Wheeler’s eerie, color-saturated photograph of a young homeless man who could, for all outward appearances, be the second coming of the reluctant idol himself.

You can find more details on the Art Museum‘s website.

Ronnie James Dio (1942-2010)

Many of you wrote in with the news that legendary metal/hard rock pioneer Ronnie James Dio (born Ronald James Padavona) succumbed to stomach cancer at 7:45am on May 16th. Dio, 67, followed Ozzy Osbourne as Black Sabbath’s lead vocalist in 1979 and recorded three albums with the influential band. Afterwards, he formed the eponymous Dio who released the heavy metal staple, ,Holy Diver and several other albums with a variety of lineups. Dio most recently was touring with Heaven and Hell, a version of Black Sabbath renamed for legal reasons. All shows were canceled last March because of his illness.

Our deepest condolences go out to his family and friends.

Why Harmonix did Rock Band: Green Day after the Beatles

Some people were surprised that Harmonix, producers of the Rock Band series of games, would tackle Green Day‘s catalogue after creating a game devoted to the single most influential band of all time, The Beatles. In a recent article, the company explained:

We were pleased with the performance of Beatles: Rock Band but we were expecting higher sales, Our core audience of 16 to 34-year-old males are much more familiar with Green Day music than The Beatles. This isn’t a band that has been around for a short period – they’ve been going 21 years. They have a great history. It is in fact a much wider audience than some people might give them credit for. Green Day probably has a much higher awareness than perhaps The Beatles did.

The new game will drop on June 8, 2010.

Invisible Children bill passes Congress

Invisible Children, a group which provides education and economic relief to war-torn northern Uganda, has announced the successful passage of the “LRA Bill” in Congress. The charity, which counts among it’s supporters, Thrice, Fall Out Boy, Jon Foreman of Switchfoot, Chris Conley of Saves The Day and Jim Ward of Sparta/Sleepercar, cited an explanation of the bill:

After years of failed diplomatic efforts to stop the notorious rebel group called the Lord’s Resistance Army, liberal lawmakers and activists are looking forward to House passage Wednesday of a bill that would require the Obama administration to come up with a comprehensive strategy to end LRA leader Joseph Kony’s violent reign in central Africa. The House is expected to clear the measure (S 1067), sponsored by Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, with broad bipartisan support and send it on to President Obama for his signature.

This bill is particularly notable since it will help African governments cope with the LRA by providing training, equipment and intelligence rather than sending in U.S. combat troops, but it very much could deepen U.S. military involvement in the most violent corners of Africa. Check out more details here.

Fat to release Strung Out’s “Element of Sonic Defiance” on Vinyl

Fat Wreck Chords has launched a pre-order for an upcoming vinyl reissue of Strung Out‘s EP, The Element Of Sonic Defiance. This release marks the first time it will be available on vinyl and commemorates the 10th anniversary of Element which was released in 2000, shortly after the apocalypse created by the Y2K bug. Jake Burns and Jordan Cruz commented on the album and it’s meaning to the long-running band:

The Element of Sonic Defiance was a very special and important album in the progression of Strung Out. We can remember writing it and feeling like we had no limits or boundaries on us and that it was the most dynamic stuff we had written up ’til that point. It may have seemed like a big change to our fans but it really was an honest extension of a lot of the stuff we were doing on Twisted By Design, as well as our first recording with Chris. At the time it seemed like a lot of people didn’t quite get it, but now it’s become a cult classic to a lot of our fans. It’s for sure an album we’re all quite proud of and we wouldn’t change nothing about it. We’re happy that it’s finally coming out on vinyl for all our fans that still love records.

Colored vinyl pre-orders have begun and can be found here.
