Variety Magazine re-sues the Vandals over old logo

According to an Exclaim report, Variety magazine has once again sued The Vandals for their 2004 parody version of the logo from Hollywood Potato Chip. The band settled the issue initially in late 2004, but the issue has come up again due to the parody mark appearing on other sites. The Vandals posted this statement:

We also need other help. The Daily Variety claims that our old logo for Hollywood Potato Chip, which is a parody of the Daily Variety logo commenting on the materialistic culture of Hollywood, is still on the Internet and they are suing us for this. We agreed not to use this logo anymore and we have no product for sale with this logo so their claims that we are intentionally using it and harming the Daily Variety are ludicrous.

Now they are in the process of punishing us with an abusive law suit filed in Delaware, where none of the parties reside or do business, because this will cause us the most financial harm and when we get sick of it, and realize we can’t afford to fight them, we will pay them the money. That is our opinion of what is going on because we cooperated in every way to try to take the images down, but they filed the suit anyway…. in Delaware.

The band is planning a Vandals benefit show in the next little while to raise money to cover the legal fees.

M.I.A.: “Born Free [NSFW]”

Alternative hip hop experimentalist M.I.A. have reposted their video for “Born Free.” The controversial video which was directed by Romain Gavras was pulled from YouTube due to nudity, graphic violence and a scene where a young boy is shot in the head. The video itself is drawing allusions to the alleged killing of Tamil males by Sri Lankan government forces in 2009 with red-headed kids filling in for Tamil youth. The song is also notable for sampling “Ghost Rider”, a 1977 song by the post-punk band Suicide.

Check out the video here.

Fat Mike, Henry Rollins, Jello Biafra, Anti-Flag in new documentary about activism

Henry Rollins, Fat Mike of NOFX, Tom Morello of Rage Against The Machine, Jello Biafra, Justin Sane of Anti-Flag are among the participants in a new documentary titled Sounds Like a Revolution. The recently completed film was directed by Summer Preney and Jane Michener and written by Margaret Susan Martin. The only details about the film so far are from the IMDB summary which says:

Documents the rise of a new generation of activist musicians who are living proof that music is a powerful tool in the ongoing struggle for social change. From the Dixie Chicks to Michael Franti to the punk band Anti-Flag, artists across the musical spectrum recount their motivations and struggles over the last decade, in a post-9/11 world where dissent has been silenced and censorship is commonplace. No ordinary music doc, this inspiring rockumentary draws on the power of music and insights of artists to help us understand our world and find the courage to speak out about issues that concern us all.

No word on when the film will surface in theatre or home video formats.

Tom DeLonge Discusses Angels & Airwaves Movie – Love

In a new interview with ThePunkSite.com, Tom DeLonge and David Kennedy of Angels and Airwaves discussed their plans regarding their upcoming William Eubank directed film – Love. They are aiming for a theatrical release of the film but will have more details once they put complete the film this July. They did explain their thoughts on the film saying:

I can tell you, honestly, the movie is ten times better than I thought it would be. But it’s not meant to compete with Transformers. This is an art-house film and no band has really done this in a very long time. So we’re hoping that we catch some people off guard and we’re also hoping that we do something that is very credible as far its artistic acumen goes.

DeLonge also explained the reasoning behind using LOVE as the soundtrack rather than the originally planned I-Empire album:

Well, what happened was we set up these ideas about what we wanted to do for the film. We hired the director, we set up a big kind of overall reaching message and tonality and parameters for what the film would be. Then we shoved the director off on his maiden voyage and he goes out. Well he comes back two years later and we’re all thinking it’s going to be finished, we’re gonna wrap it up, we’ll let it come out with this record; and when we saw it, it just blew us away. We couldn’t believe what he did. But we also knew that it wasn’t finished yet – it needed more.

So we made a decision to clip the idea of it coming out that year and really re-invest in it and take a big swing at the fences – forgive the baseball term for people that might read this in different countries – and try to have it come out with a free record. This will be our big moment to have a hundred percent independent release. Not only with the film and the music and album or whatever, just a very DIY – do it yourself. And show what could happen if you work your ass off.
