MP3 of the Week: Residuals

Brian: Hey, remember these? Perhaps we should try to bring them back.

Anyway, Residuals added me on MySpace–remember them, too?–several months back. I think they only had a very rough demo on the page at the time, but the diverse array of influences seemed promising (As Cities Burn, Circa Survive, Verse, Tera Melos, …Who Calls So Loud), so I accepted the request and then forgot about them for a long time, since, well, MySpace is becoming the red-headed stepchild of social networks.

Cut to yesterday. I came across the band browsing Caravels’ page and their name jogged my memory. Since that initial add, the band has posted a very solid four-song demo for free download (you can acquire that here) and posted up two newer songs that are even more impressive. Think Comadre’s singer fronting a more pensive and brooding act, with plenty of moody atmospheres and cathartic tension and release. If you listen to one song, let it be their new one, “For Joy.” It’s on their aforementioned MySpace.

Sonic Youth Just a reminder. Day 2 of the Matador 21 stream is up now. Like yesterday, the set is a series of live performances celebrating Matador Records‘ 21st Birthday. Performes include Chavez, Fucked Up, Sonic Youth, Pavement, Girls, Come, Perfume Genius, Cat Power, Superchunk, Spoon, Belle and Sebastian, Shearwater, Ted Leo and The Pharmacists, New Pornographers, Liz Phair 9 and Guided By Voices.

Stay Ahead of the Weather: “Sorority Social Suicide”

Stay Ahead of the Weather Chicago-area bearded supergroup Stay Ahead of the Weather have unveiled a new song. The band is the new project from Evan Weiss, formerly of Damiera and currently performing solo under the moniker Into It. Over It., as well as Nick Wakim of Castevet and Native‘s Bobby Markos. “Sorority Social Suicide” will appear on the group’s debut 7-inch, We Better Get Goin’ If We’re Gonna, due out on December 7, 2010 via No Sleep Records.

New 7″ from Chris Wollard & The Ship Thieves on the way

Chris Wollard and The Ship Thieves Sound Study Recordings has announced plans to release a new 7″ from Chris Wollard and the Ship Thieves. The record will feature two brand new songs and is slated to first go on sale at The Fest 9 flea market on October 29. The records will be hand-numbered and limited to 500 copies.

The band last released their self-titled debut in 2009 and will be appearing at The Fest on Halloween, according to the day schedule.

Tours: A Wilhelm Scream (East Coast)

A Wilhelm Scream It’s October, and you know what that means: more and more bands are gearing up for tours to and from The Fest 9 in Gainesville, FL over Halloween weekend. A Wilhelm Scream will soon pack up their basketball shorts and head south for shows with Strike Anywhere, The Flatliners and No Friends, and then head back to the northeast for four post-Fest shows with Heartsounds.

The band continues to support their 2009 self-titled EP.

Split LP from Koji, Into It. Over It. on the way

Into It. Over It. No Sleep Records has detailed an upcoming split LP from Into It. Over It. and Koji. Due out November 23, 2010 and appropriately titled IIOI /KOJI, the ten-track set will feature five songs from each artist and collaborations with members of Castevet, La Dispute, Cloudmouth and more. In conjunction with the vinyl’s release, Colormake will be releasing three behind-the-scenes video of the album’s recording process.
