Canadian pop-punk act Sum 41 has been forced to cancel their return to the Vans Warped Tour. The band had played over 20 dates this season before taking a leave to play Japan’s Summersonic Festival. In Japan frontman Deryck Whibley was attacked in what’s being described as a “random unprovoked incident,” which has aggrevated a slipped disk injury that he sustained in 2007. While the band chose to perform the festival in Osaka and Tokyo despite the injury and advice of doctors, Whibley’s condition has not improved. Drummer Steve Jocz commented:
Being a part of the Warped Tour this summer meant a lot to us. We haven’t toured in two years and the bands, the crowds and the entire Warped Tour crew have been amazing to us. We were excited to be back in front of our fans and are very disappointed that we have to pull off the tour. We know that it would be more frustrating for the fans if we can’t give it our all. Deryck is doing everything he can to get himself better and we’re there for him.
With so much folk and folk-punk music out there today, it’s nice to know that there’s a group of musicians who are in it for the right reasons. The Riot Folk Collective gives away all of their music for free either online or at shows if you don’t have the money. Punknews interviewer Matt spent an evening at an anarchist bookstore and coffee shop in Baltimore named Red Emmas to hear one of the Riot Folk’s workhorses, Mark Gunnery, play. After a heartfelt, but not too-serious set from the Jewish folk artist, they arranged an interview, to be conducted over the phone, for the very next day. To hear the extended audio interview, which features listener-submitted questions at the end, go here.
Sundowner was recently featured on Switchboard Sessions. Chris McCaughan called in to perform “The Flicker,” from his new album We Chase the Waves, as well an acoustic rendition of “The Slowest Drink At The Saddest Bar On The Snowiest Day In The Greatest City,” from The Lawrence Arms‘ 2009 7″ Buttsweat and Tears. Check it out here.
Hopeless Records has detailed their reissue of The Wonder Years‘ 2010 album, The Upsides. The album features new artwork and four new tracks in addition to the original release. The band will be touring with Four Year Strong and New Found Glory later this year.
