A release date has been set for the DVD release of the Joe Strummer documentary titled The Future is Unwritten. It is set for release on July 08, 2008.
The film promises an intimate biographical portrait of Clash frontman, vocalist, rhythm guitarist, and primal lyricist Joe Strummer who passed away in 2002. Director Julian Temple had a 30-year association with John Graham Mellor aka Joe Strummer and along with covering his entire life, the film includes narration by Strummer himself from his BBC radio show which featured some 65 of Joe’s favorite songs.
Along with archival footage and Joe’s narration, the film includes anecdotes from friends and collaborators including Mick Jones, Steve Jones, Bono, Topper Headon, Pearl Harbour, Don Letts, Joe Ely, John Cusack, Johnny Depp, Flea, Matt Dillon, Martin Scorsese, Steve Buscemi, Grandmaster Melle Mel, Courtney Love, Anthony Kiedis, Jim Jarmusch, Lucinda Mellor (Joe’s widow), and many others.
The film had its premiere at the Sundance Festival in January 2007. That was followed by screenings at the Dublin Film Festival in February; and in London the following May, where it went on to win a British Independent Film Award for Best Documentary. Acclaim across the U.S. was unanimous, with many critics listing it among their Top 10 films of the year.
The DVD will include the original film as well as commentary from the directory and an additional 100 minutes of interviews that did not make the final cut.
