East Bay Ray, of Dead Kennedys fame, has released the first new song from his band, The Killer Smiles. Along with Ray, the band features Skip McSkipster from the Wynona Riders, drummer Steve Wilson (from Tatu) and bassist Greg Reeves of Cordovan. The band recorded an album at El Dorado Studios in Los Angeles with Paul Leary (Butthole Surfers, Sublime).

The Dead Kennedys declared an indefinite touring hiatus due to health issues faced by bassist Klaus Flouride and drummer D.H. Peligro.

Green Day‘s Broadway musical version of American Idiot has won two of the three Tony awards for which it was nominated. The show lost Best Musical to Memphis but won for Best Scenic Design and Best Lighting Design. Producers Tom Hulce and Ira Pittelman, director Michael Mayer and star John Gallagher Jr. all worked on 2007’s Tony-winning “Spring Awakening.”

Green Day also performed live with the cast.

Bigwig have (re-)posted another rare track. The new addition is the band’s take on the Jawbreaker classic, “Ashtray Monument.” The song comes from Jawbreaker’s last independent release, 24 Hour Revenge Therapy which was released in 1994. Bigwig’s cover of the song previously appeared on the 2003 Dying Wish Records compilation, Bad Scene, Everyone’s Fault: Jawbreaker Tribute. That compilation also includes Face to Face, Fall Out Boy, Sparta, Kill Your Idols, Nerf Herder and many others.

The reason for the re-posting is so that Bigwig could announce plans to release a remastered version of the song as part of a remastered b-sides compilation expected on vinyl and digital download later in 2010.

I’m Adam White and I’ll be your guide through some of the most popular, notable, and otherwise attention getting stories of the past seven days. Each and every Punknews story is built from tips contributed by you fine folks, and here’s what got the community talking this week:

• A report in Billboard noted that album sales have hit rock bottom with the week ending May 30th bringing in the lowest music sales numbers since data began to be collected in `94.
• Max Bemis of Say Anything sat down on video to chat with the Lawrence Arms‘ Brendan Kelly and Red Scare Records’ Toby Jeg. Topics strange, slow and old were touched upon.
• Tour head honcho Kevin Lyman made a number of comments on the 2010 Warped Tour. As usual the question of what bands and genres are showcased dominated the discussion.
• The Gaslight Anthem is streaming their new album American Slang
• Vocalist/guitarist Dan Vapid stated in a recent interview that The Methadones will call it a day by year’s end.
• Frank Turner has returned from Israel and defended his decision to play dates there.
• The Alkaline Trio‘s Matt Skiba released the new solo song “S.O.S.”

Metal/punk act Protest The Hero are aiming to hit the studio in August to record the follow up to 2008’s Fortress. They posted this update:

We made a little video of some of the stuff we have been working at in the space for the past few months. As it looks right now, we will be starting the actual recording process in August.

The band has also posted a video showing some of the pre-production process and rehearsals for the record. Since the release of their last full length, the Toronto-based band released the live album, Gallop Meets the Earth in 2009.

New wave and punk pioneers Devo have posted a stream of their upcoming album. The band took an unusual route for the album, by launching an Official Song Study. The band posted portions of each of the tracks they recorded for the album and asked fans to rank and vote about which songs would appear on the final full length. Of the sixteen songs shown in this way, fans and study participants selected the 12 that will appear on the album itself. The record is titled Something For Everybody and is due out June 15, 2010 via Warner. It’s their first since 1990’s Smooth Noodle Maps.

Operation MD have announced plans to release a new album. The group is the side project from Sum 41 bassist Jason “Cone” McCaslin and H2O‘s Todd Morse. According to a Chart Attack report, the album “ is more of a garage record, borrowing heavily from acts like The Hives and Violent Femmes. ”

Along with Cone and Todd, the album features contributions by Billy Talent guitarist Ian D’Sa and Sum 41 bandmate Deryck Whibley. D’Sa produced lead single “Buried At Sea,” and Whibley mixed “Sick And Twisted.”

“Buried at Sea” is currently streaming on the band’s MySpace page. The record is titled Birds + Bee Stings and is due out digitally on June 29, 2010.

Authority Zero have finalized the dates for their upcoming tour. The band is hitting the road later this month with Whole Wheat Bread, Lionize and Chase Long Beach. The bands will head across the US as Authority Zero kicks off support for their upcoming album, Stories of Survival which is due out June 22, 2010. The record is the first release for Viking Funeral Records (the imprint founded by Pennywise guitarist Fletcher Dragge, Ken Seaton of Hardline Entertainment and Suburban Noize Records).
