Invisible Children bill passes Congress

Invisible Children, a group which provides education and economic relief to war-torn northern Uganda, has announced the successful passage of the “LRA Bill” in Congress. The charity, which counts among it’s supporters, Thrice, Fall Out Boy, Jon Foreman of Switchfoot, Chris Conley of Saves The Day and Jim Ward of Sparta/Sleepercar, cited an explanation of the bill:

After years of failed diplomatic efforts to stop the notorious rebel group called the Lord’s Resistance Army, liberal lawmakers and activists are looking forward to House passage Wednesday of a bill that would require the Obama administration to come up with a comprehensive strategy to end LRA leader Joseph Kony’s violent reign in central Africa. The House is expected to clear the measure (S 1067), sponsored by Democratic Sen. Russ Feingold of Wisconsin, with broad bipartisan support and send it on to President Obama for his signature.

This bill is particularly notable since it will help African governments cope with the LRA by providing training, equipment and intelligence rather than sending in U.S. combat troops, but it very much could deepen U.S. military involvement in the most violent corners of Africa.
