Silverstein: “Apologize (One Republic)”

Silverstein have released their contribution to the upcoming Punk Goes Pop 2 compilation. The Burlington-based band – who most likely have a better record collection than you – covered OneRepublic’s “Apologize” for the comp. which is due out February 17, 2009. The band commented on the song:

The interesting thing is that even though we’ve been a band for 9 years, we’ve never really done any covers. The only one we did was a cover of Lifetime’s “Rodeo Clown” for a tribute album that never came out. Most bands start out doing some covers before they write their own songs, but we jumped right into originals.

When we had to choose a song, there was a million we talked about doing, but we all agreed that “Apologize” would be rad. It was a song we all secretly rocked out to, a total guilty pleasure. It’s super catchy, it’s the kind of song you hear once and it’s instantly stuck in your head.

We had so much fun recording this that we decided to do some other covers as well. We’re almost done recording our new album and we’re going to have some B-Side cover songs as well. Check that out on March 31st!

Bands on the disc include Alesana, Attack Attack, August Burns Red, Bayside, Breathe Carolina, The Cab, A Day To Remember, Escape The Fate, Four Year Strong, Mayday Parade, Silverstein, A Static Lullaby and There For Tomorrow.

You can check out the song here.

Slayer’s Tom Araya talks about new songs, 25th anniversary of debut

Revolver recently spoke with Slayer bassist/vocalist Tom Araya about their upcoming album, 25th anniversary and more. Regarding their recording process

We have an idea of what we want the song to sound like; it’s making it sound the way we want it to that’s hard. And we’re our own worst critics. If Jeff [Hanneman, guitar] puts together a song and it, to him, doesn’t sound good, then he won’t even bother presenting the song. The guys have to like the songs they write before we get to see and hear them. So this time [for the band’s recording session in October] he had these three he liked, and we went into the studio with ’em and we knew how we wanted them, the basic idea of the songs, and we needed someone to come in and take charge. It wasn’t like we went in there and started playing a bunch of riffs and said, “OK, this sounds good…

As for the 25 years since Show No Mercy:

Y’know, one day someone said, “You guys have been together this many years.” “Really? Wow!” We all kind of looked at each other, dumbfounded, and stunned. It’s not something where we’ve ever sat down and said, “We’ve been together five years, let’s have a party! We’ve been together 10 years, let’s have a party!'” or anything like that.

The rest of the interview will appear in the 2009 Preview issue of the magazine.

Dillinger 4 to play Fargo

Dillinger Four has announced plans for a one-off show in Fargo, North Dakota. The band explained:

For reals, in the 39 years we’ve been a band we have NEVER played Fargo? And it’s, like, right over there yknow? What the hell? Anyway, Chris was all “dudes?” and we we’re like “I know right!?” So now the shit is going down on Jan. 10th, which also just happens to be Paddy’s 16th annual 21st birthday.

Marked Men stream new tracks, announce tracklist, dispel breakup rumors

The Marked MenDenton, TX’s The Marked Men have posted two new songs to their MySpace page. The tracks are titled “Fortune” and “Ditch” and are off of the group’s new album Ghosts, set for release on January 27, 2009.

The band had this to say about their rumored demise:

‘Hiatus’ may not be the right word to use. It’s all up in the air. With Jeff in Japan, Joe in El Paso, Mike having two kids, I really don’t know if we’ll be able to play again. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see. It’s okay, though. The band had been around for a while, since 2002. I don’t want to beat it to death.
