Verse (2003-2009)

Verse Verse has called it quits. The band made this statement:

This has been one of the most important things in our lives for quite a while now. While it’s sad to see it come to an end, we’re all glad we can look back on some great experiences we have had, and wonderful people we have met throughout the years.

None of us are too sure about how we feel about doing a final show, not ruling it out completely, but sometimes that can come off the wrong way, and none of us want that. if we can do it right, we will do it.

The band’s final album was 2008’s Aggression. Punknews.org readers voted it one of the best of 2008.

Hello everybody and welcome to Navel Gazing: your look back at the week in Punknews. I’m Adam White and I’ll be your guide through some of the most popular, notable, and otherwise attention getting stories of the past seven days. Each and every Punknews story is built from tips contributed by you fine folks, and here’s what got the strange, slow, old people in the community talking…

The People Must Have Something Good To Read On A Sunday
This week’s most popular stories

This week brought us a further progress report on Rancid‘s upcoming album. Epitaph head and Bad Religion guitarist / songwriter Brett Gurewitz has finished mixing the release and it’s set for a spring release. Blink-182‘s road to an inevitable reunion continues, as the three members of the pop-punk act share the stage as Grammy presenters. Winnipeg’s Propagandhi unveiled the new song “Dear Coach’s Corner” this week on BBC Radio 1. In a recent interview Say Anything head Max Bemis commented on his ongoing (and really amusing) tiff with the Punknews.org readership. My Chemical Romance unveiled their video for “Desolation Row”. The popular band produced the Bob Dylan cover for the soundtrack of the upcoming Watchmen film. The band also discussed their upcoming fourth album.

Fat Mike of NOFX discussed the upcoming DVD release of the Backstage Passport series. He also took the opportunity to rip into Avenged Sevenfold for good measure. 311 posted an update on their next record, as did mewithoutYou who confirmed their confirm title and release date. We had news that Have Heart and Polar Bear Club would hit the road soon. The Bamboozle has unveiled their lineup, which will feature Fall Out Boy, No Doubt, Taking Back Sunday and Rise Against. The Deftones will also play the event, notable in light of the car accident that’s sidelined bassist Chi Cheng. Bonnaroo will feature a diverse roster including Bruce Springsteen, the Beastie Boys, the Mars Volta, Nine Inch Nails and Neko Case. This week saw new audio from In The Hollows, featuring former and current members of Champion, Pulling Teeth and Ruiner. We also heard music from Jazzbreaker, a jazz / big band tribute to Jawbreaker. This week saw a number of tributes to Bruce Springsteen, including videos from Ted Leo And The Pharmacists and Brian Fallon of Gaslight Anthem as well as Against Me!‘s Tom Gabel.

This week we said goodbye legendary Cramps frontman Lux Interior (1948-2009).

Updates from Deftones, will play Bamboozle regardless

Members of the Deftones have posted an updated on their bandmate Chi Cheng. The bassist has been in a coma since November of 2008:

Our fallen comrade has not made significant progress as of late, but continues to fight on from his accident. Doctors are working feverishly to return our brother to us, and we continue to hold out hope and faith that Chi returns to the life he has waiting for him and can join us on stage once again.

For everyone that knows Chi, knows that he never wanted down time. Chi always wanted to keep working and never slow down, which is why we feel confident in returning to the stage at Bamboozle in April. Chi would want it, and we want to make sure we’re keeping his legacy alive.

Back in 1999, Chi had to leave the band for a brief moment and our close friend Sergio Vega filled in to keep the train moving. 10 years later, Sergio is going to step in once again while Chi is down. Sergio is family to us, and had received Chi’s blessing before, so without a doubt we know that if Chi could tell us now, he would give us his blessing again.

In the meantime, we continue work on our record, and as for Bamboozle, we felt like we needed to poke our heads up for a quick breath before we buckle down and get this record finished. So we’ll see you all in Irvine.

Squirtgun’s Flav Giorgini / Mike Scott (UK) plan Split LP

A split acoustic album between Squirtgun‘s Flav Giorgini and Mike Scott, from English melodic hardcore band Phinius Gage, is being released in the US by new Californian label Drop Anchor! Entertainment (home to Chon Travis). Its mastered by Mass Giorgini.

The label explained:

American pop-punk legends Squirtgun and English melodic hardcore act Phinius Gage are two bands separated by style, a decade or so and several thousand miles, but Flav Giorgini and Mike Scott have come together to offer a split acoustic album despite all the odds. Meeting when they both played some shows in the UK with Kevin Seconds, they hit on the idea of a record together, which saw the light of day in Europe in January 2009.
