Lipona working on New EP

Lipona has posted a blog about their upcoming EP titled Pigeonholed. Two demo’s from the EP are available on their Myspace.

“It’s been a while since we’ve posted an update and we have a lot of exciting news to announce. First, we’re mid-way through tracking our 2nd EP, Pigeonholed. This album has marked a new direction for the band and we think this might be some of the best work we’ve ever done. It’s faster, more technical, and has a more refined sound than anything we’ve ever put out.

Whereas Atlas was an introspective album, this EP is the opposite – the subject matter revolves around the current political climate and how we’ve all been dealing with the instability going on in the world. It’s getting mixed by Mark Michalik (The Swellers, Much the Same) and we’re really excited to see how it’s going to turn out. If you haven’t read about it, it will be yet another free EP but this time we’ll be pressing it on vinyl as well!”

The band released Atlas in 2008.

John Doe of X and the Sadies collaborate on “Country Club”

Exclaim is reporting that X frontman John Doe will collaborate with Toronto alt-country act the Sadies on an upcoming record. The Yep Roc Records released project will be titled Country Club and will feature the pairing taking on classic country tunes along with new originals. It’s expected in stores on April 14th. Doe commented:

Country Club is the result of a drunken promise or threat I made to Travis and Dallas [Good, of the Sadies] the first night we played together in Toronto… These happen all the time but it’s rare that anyone remembers them the morning after, let alone follows through and makes it a reality. I’m really glad we did.

The album features reworkings of songs by Merle Haggard, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash. It will feature guest appearances by Ottawa’s Kathleen Edwards, Blue Rodeo’s Bob Egan and several other members of the Good family. X’s Exene Cervenka shares a writing credit on one of the new originals.

The Sadies last released New Seasons in 2007. Doe released A Year In The Wilderness the same year.

None More Black updates, drummer departs, new record

None More Black have an update for 2009:

It saddens us to announce the departure of our long time drummer and brother, Jared Shavelson, from the band. He shared the most time with us, and is possibly one of the best drummers around today. However, the time has come for both entities to move in different directions.

We’d like to introduce the newest addition to the NMB family, who most of you may know from bands such as, New Mexican Disaster Squad & Gatorface. As well as being the man behind Horsebites Design.. Richard Minino!! Richard has been a long time friend of ours, and it’s a pleasure to announce his addition to the band.

We’re also workin on some new music, which will not be made available anytime soon, nor will be complete anytime soon. Just know the machine is slowly moving and preparing to crush in 2009.

The band released This Is Satire in 2006. Frontman Jason Shevchuck recently contributed vocals to P.O.S’ Never Better.

Fat Mike talks DVD, rips into Avenged Sevenfold

Fat Mike of NOFX recently spoke to Campus Circle about their forthcoming DVD release of Backstage Passport on March 17, 2009.

Mike explained why the DVD is special:

Fuse tried to do the same thing with other bands, but they aren’t as entertaining as us. Other bands won’t show drug use, and they aren’t particularly funny to begin with. They are young and haven’t lived life long enough. It’s kind of sad that bands are so concerned about their careers. They tone down their music like they tone down themselves. You can’t go on a big rock tour and go crazy anymore. It’s like we’re in our own little world.

He compares this attitude to Avenged Sevenfold saying:

Avenged Sevenfold is the epitome of what’s wrong with rock and roll. They support Bush. Support the Iraq War. Wouldn’t accept a drink ’cause they have to play the next day, but tell everyone they party. And play to a fucking DAT tape. However, a couple of them are decent poker players.

Check out the interview here.

F*cked Up nominated for Juno, plan “Year of the Rat” single

Toronto’s Fucked Up have been nominated for a Canadian Juno. The Juno is a Canadian music award, and not a wise-cracking pregnant teenager with a unnatural dialogue and a hamburger phone. The award in question is in the category, “Alternative Album of the Year” and winners will be announced March 29th.

The band has also announced plans to release a new 12-inch single, The Year of the Rat, on What’s Your Rupture. The two-song 12-inch will include the title track and “First Born.” If previously 12-inch albums are any indication, the 12-inch will include some really long songs.
