When I first started getting heavily into punk around 9th grade, Operation Ivy was one of the first bands to really resonate with me. Their simple message of individualism, unity, and nonconformity was uncompromising, but never without a glimmer of hope hidden beneath. Years later I heard my first taste of Common Rider and was blown away to find out it was the same singer as Operation Ivy, Jesse Michaels. Since then, I have collected every piece of music he has done, from Operation Ivy bootlegs to the four-song Big Rig EP, to Common Rider and beyond. When I heard Jesse Michaels and his new band Classics of Love was coming to Minneapolis, I jumped at the chance to interview him and could not be happier with meeting him and finding out more about his life and projects. In a 2003 interview, Michaels said of the late Joe Strummer, “I was lucky enough to meet him and he was everything one would hope for in somebody they looked up to.” Now I can say the same of Jesse Michaels.

Andrew Elderbaum, former bassist and lyricist from Bayside, has unveiled his new project – Victory Records – Andrew posted a note explaining:
The answers to these questions are yes, sometimes, and nope, he found one he’s even worse at. The last few years I’ve realized that bands take themselves way to seriously, and that I was incredibly guilty of that as well. I grew up listening to bands like The Vandals, NOFX, Lagwagon etc. They weren’t jokes but they were fun. So taking a cue from the badly missed Kevin Wade I’ve decided somebody needs to point out how ridiculous things have gotten.
I have a new project called Victory Records, and when Tony gets around to suing me after he finishes duping some other 18 year old kid into signing away his songs for 5 albums, we’ll change the name to Victory Rex, because satire is protected by the constitution and Brummel is not. This time around I’m playing guitar and doing some singing, along with our old drummer Jason playing bass, and our friends Mike and Dave on guitar, drums, and vocals. We just finished up a ten song “ice breaker” that we have no intention of giving to any label.
You can check out the band here.

Epitaph Records metal/hardcore act Vanna have announced the replacement of vocalist Chris Preece with Davey Muise of Seeker Destroyer. The former vocalist explained:
After this tour, I will no longer be in Vanna. I know this will come with a good amount of initial shock but if I can I’d like to preempt at least some of that shock by saying that the decision is based entirely on personal reasons and has absolutely nothing to do with drama of any sort.
The silver lining in all of this is that we have already found a replacement, Davey Muise, and there is no doubt that our fans and friends will approve enthusiastically. He has been a great friend of ours for a long time, and we couldn’t be happier.
Vanna issued A New Hope this year.
