Ted Leo And The Pharmacists join Matador

Ted Leo And The Pharmacists In a post on their official website, Ted Leo has announced that he and his Pharmacists will release their next full-length through Matador Records. Leo had this to say about the situation:

“During a recent conversation over an iced coffee (and then a couple of shots of Jamesons, if I’m going to be completely honest) with Gerard Cosloy in Austin, Tx., however, I thought, “I should hang out with this guy more often,” then later meeting the rest of the incredible staff at the office, and counting myself unaccountably blessed at the uncountable bounty of amazing people and labels that I had before me to potentially work with, I made up my mind to join the Matador team … There are so many options and so many opportunities to do so many things with the music that one makes, but I feel GREAT that as I head off to start mixing some songs this weekend, I can say that I now do so in preparation for an album to be released on Matador Records, most likely sometime in the coming spring.”

The band’s previous full-length was 2007’s Living with the Living; an EP entitled Rapid Response followed in 2008. Both releases were handled by Touch and Go Records, a legendary label that unfortunately closed their distribution arm earlier this year. Although the label itself is apparently still in business – and reissued three records from The Jesus Lizard just this week – Leo made it clear that the label’s downsizing left his band without a home:

“Soooooooooooooo, as many of you know, our beloved Touch & Go Records was forced to shut down most of its operations early last spring, leaving everyone mourning and filled with more questions than we thought we’d have to keep asking ourselves in 2009, and leaving us, specifically, again label-less.”

Scientist pit vinyl against CD, digital formats

Scientist John Meyer of Newform Research has tried to settle the long-running debate about the fidelity and quality of CD and digital technologies and vinyl and analog tech. The result attempts to mathematically quantify the differences in all the technologies and assigns a “fidelity” rating to each thing.

Vinyl aficionados may find the results interesting, though not completely satisfying. For example, the researcher finds that vinyl has a wider frequency range (50 khz) than CD (44.1 khz) but a narrower bitrate (12.5) than CD (16) and the result is a slightly lower overall fidelity according to the study. Unfortunately, it doesn’t look like the debate will be settled by this study alone.

Check out the report and let us know what you prefer.

Fred Mascherino (The Color Fred)

The Color Fred In a time when bands and artists are compromising themselves for big rock and roll dreams, it’s refreshing to see an artist who has said “Fuck you” to the allusions of fame and fortune for a simpler, but happier existence. With a new, darker album slated for early next year, a VW Rabbit full of re-used vegetable oil and a musically liberated soul, Fred Mascherino of The Color Fred, and formerly of Taking Back Sunday, sat down with Gen Handley from Punknews to discuss why he’s in a happier place now and what the color Fred actually looks like.
