Battlefield 1942 on Top

Its been a while since I posted the NPD Group/NPD Techworld list of the top 10 selling games, but the latest list brings up a point. Take a look at who is in the number 1 spot.

Week of September 14-20, 2003:

Rank – Title – Publisher – Average Price

1 – Battlefield 1942 – EA – $29

2 – Star Wars: Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy – LucasArts – $49

3 – Battlefield 1942: Secret Weapons of WWII – EA – $25

4 – The Sims Deluxe – EA – $42

5 – Flight Sim 2004: A Century of Flight – Microsoft – $52

6 – Homeworld 2 – Vivendi Universal – $48

7 – EverQuest: Lost Dungeons of Norrath – Sony – $27

8 – Madden NFL 2004 – EA – $35

9 – The Sims: Superstar – EA – $30

10 – Diablo II – Vivendi Universal – $20

I find it very interesting considering the game peaked a while back. I wonder why BF42 has seen such a turn around. I think the resurgence is based not only on the game itself, but on the lower price and the cool mods currently available and gaining in popularity. These mods include Desert Combat, Eve of Destruction, Forgotten Hope, Pirates, Galactic Conquest, GI Joe and Experience WWII. Without the hard work of these free mods, I do not believe Battlefield 1942 would not be as popular as it is.
