We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen

Our band could be your life, real names be proof….

I watched We Jam Econo: The Story of the Minutemen on DVD tonight (Thank You Netflix!). This is a 90 minute documentary about the how the band came about, its D.I.Y. philosophy, and the void left by the untimely death of D. Boon in a traffic accident on December 22, 1985. It features interviews with Mike Watt and George Hurley as well as a long list of punk rock icons. Disk 1 Contains the 90 Minute Documentary and 2+ Hours of extras and Disk 2 Contains 62 live songs from 3 full performances.

Growing up in a small town in the pre-internet days of the 70s and 80s, I didnt have a lot of exposure to anything that wasnt mainstream pop or country on the radio stations in the area. I first heard of the Minutemen through R.E.M. which I had just started listening to after I had stumbled upon someones taped copy of their Murmur album. I happened to read in Rolling Stone that R.E.M was going on tour with the Minutemen and so I figured if R.E.M. liked them enough to tour with them, that they must be good. So next time I went to “the big city” (actually a small town but they did have Dartmouth college and an awesome record store) I dug around until I found Double Nickels on A Dime. It took a few listens before I began to appreciate the genius that is that album as it was nothing like what I was expecting. I have since worn out to cassette copies but have finally secured a digital copy so I wont have to worry about that again. I also purchased everything else that I could find by them in the meantime. Their unique style of music combined with overt politics, and their passion for life and the music just struck a chord with me that has kept me listening to them for 20 years. Tonight I finally got to hear their story as told by them and their friends and it kept me transfixed for several hours.

This little spiel (to steal Mike Watt & D. Boons term) doesnt do this film or the band justice, but if you like the Minutemen or even if you have never heard of them check it out, it will be good for you.

You can read more about the movie and buy the DVD here: We Jam Econo

Is BF2142 Hard To Say?

Ive been thinking about lately about BF2142. I do that from time to time, but its not what you think. I am not talking about the game. I am talking about the name. You see, BF2142 does not have a good ring to it. Its almost too complicated. Here is how I see it.

First, we had Battlefield 1942. We shortened it to BF42. Easy enough. Then came Battlefield Vietnam. Again, we shortened it to BFV. Smooth and rolls off the tongue. Next, EA released the third game in the Battlefield Franchise, Battlefield 2. (Dont ask) This became BF2. So far, so good. The next game in the series is called Battlefield 2142. So what does it become when abbreviated? BF twenty-one-forty-two. Say that fast 10 times while holding your tongue. Ouch!

I have a proposal. Its quite silly actually, but I think it would give the next game in the Battlefield franchise a nice and easy name. My proposal is to abbreviate the name to BFBJ. I know what you are thinking. It reminds you of a hummer from that hot girl who only wants to be your friend.

How about this? Battlefield BlackJack aka BFBJ aka BF21. I like the name BF BlackJack better than BF21. Then again, Battlefield 2142 is kind of BF2.1. Hey, maybe we should call it BF2.1?

So, which one do you like? BFBJ or BF2.1?

Atomm Nihilo runs GamersRadio.com and has a Love/Hate relationship with EA and Battlefield that some would say borders on the edge of addiction.

Calling All Music Fans!

We are starting a new contest at Gamers Radio. If you like music, then drop by and give us a hand at testing it out. Here are the details.

We are going to start a new monthly contest. For the months of July and August, it is a dry run only. September will be official with a $10 Itunes Gift Card or a 3 Month VIP subscription to Live365 as the prize. Winner will get to choose.

The Rules:

1. I will post a single word from the lyrics of a song at random intervals.
2. You may make one guess with the Artist and Song Title after each word is posted.
3. We will keep track of the winners and the last week of the month will be a “Name That Tune” type contest.
4. Songs can be from any Rock or Pop Genre from any time period.

Final Round
1. When the final round starts, only previous winners for the month will be allowed to participate.
2. Each winner will tell me how many words they can name the tune in.
3. Once all winners have posted, the lowest number gets first guess.
4. If they miss it, the next highest number will get a guess.
5. There is a catch though. Only one word will be added after each miss.
6. If all contestants miss, we will start over. However, we will pick a different part of the song for the next round.

Monday Links of Interest

Welcome to a new tidbit we are doing on Mondays. We will bring you 3-5 links that we find interesting. If you think you have an interesting site, please send us feedback and let us know.

I have to give credit where credit is due. This idea is not my own. I got it from Jason Murphys Blog. He does a segment called Free Links Friday where he puts up 7 links and tells you why he finds them interesting. I think its a great idea and I encourage you to check his blog, especially on Fridays for 7 Sites You Should See. Thanks Jason for linking us in your last list and thanks for a great idea. I hope you dont mind sharing. After all, the Internets a big place. 🙂

Our second link of interest comes directly from Jason Murphy. Hes going to kill me…. heh. But, I thought it was too good of a cause not to put it on our first list.

Let me introduce Michael OConnell. Michael has Muscular Dystrophy. Michael was very fortunate to have been given a Van at the age of 24 back in 1992. Needless to say, it has seen its last days. Michael put up a webpage telling you about himself, why he needs a van with an extremely expensive driving setup.

Michael brings up a point that I personally appreciate. Even though he is handicapped, he works for a living. His van has allowed him to do that. Because of this, he does not require government assistance. I think a lot of us take for granted how much having the ability to get to work increases our quality of life.

Go read Michaels Story. Its very humorous. Check out the pics of the old brown Econoline VAN, then check out the cool new (2002) Van with Starship Enterprise like controls, Blue Flames and a working FM stereo. When you are done, be sure and donate to his van fund.

Rock On Michael!

Our third link of interest is for a site called Fever Gaming. Doesnt sound familiar? It shouldnt, but you may have known it in another life as TotalBF2.com. You see, Fever Gaming is the work of a fella by the name of GameWizard. Now he should be familiar to you. After all, he was the guy that created and made TotalBF2.com what it is today.

I will not go into boring details, but Fever Gaming is running a copy of the TotalBF2.com Forums database. It is my understanding that GameWizard was fired from TotalBF2.com, even though he was actually the owner of the site. It is still to be see what contractual obligations were made between him and MyIS over the purchase of TotalBF2.com.

MyIS are the guys who brought you the Battlefield Rules of Engagement and pushed for EA to make them the official Rules for all Ranked Servers. In addition, they have appointed themselves the keepers of the rules and are taking up violation submissions for their review. If the "bf police" are watching us, then who is watching them?

I liked the TotalBF2 community of the past. If you are like me, then I encourage you to drop by Fever Gaming and become a contributing part of the new Battlefield Community.

Thats it for this week’s Links of Interest. Next week, Sarge or Bubba will tell you about theirs.

Battlefield 2 1.4 Beta Testing Begins

Directly from the EAUK BF2 Forums

We are beginning the first phase of our 1.4 patch beta testing! This initial phase of testing will only include a small number of servers whose focus is to ensure stability in a live environment. At the completion of this phase we will be rapidly expanding the number of servers hosted to allow everyone an opportunity to review this latest patch. I would like to stress that everyone who downloads the beta files should take the time to read the included text file so that you can properly safeguard your current BF2 install.

Also please note that EA Customer Service can not provide any support for issues related to the Beta Patch. I encourage everyone to log into the EA Battlefield forums and participate on the 1.4 Patch Beta discussions that will cover both 1.4 issues, tuning changes, and new features.

We have up threads for issues and gameplay feedback, please make sure you post in the right one once they are unlocked.

A few of the servers hosted will be set to the new ‘No Vehicles’ server setting that will allow players to focus on infantry vs infantry combat on all BF2 and Special Forces Maps. Other servers will include the new ‘Road to Jalalabad’ map which will allow US and MEC forces to engage in a new urban warfare environment! Everyone here at EA and DICE look forward to working with the community to ensure this next patch is a solid step forward for the Battlefield Franchise.

-The Battlefield Team

The last paragraph is particularly interesting imo. Download links can be found in the link above. This has only been out a short time, so feedback is minimal so far.

Discuss and provide feedback here in the Gamers Radio Forums.

Double The Available Listener Slots!

Live365 recently doubled the number of listener slots available on our station until August 1st. What that means is instead of only have 100 Free Listener Slots, we now have 200 Free Listener Slots! WOOHOO! We hate the fact that we can only offer 100 Free Slots, but that is the limit given our current budget. So, for the time being, we have 200 and it is up to you to fill all 200 up!

By doing so, maybe we can help convince Live365 to make the doubled number of slots a permanent thing. Wouldnt that be great!

As always, thanks for listening and keep coming back to the website. We are working on some new exciting things that we think you will enjoy!
